About the company
Leckerlee is a NYC-based company specializing in baking authentic German lebkuchen in the Nuremberg style. The company was founded in 2011 by Sandy Lee after 2 1/2 years in Berlin, where she first encountered lebkuchen at a Christmas market. Lebkuchen became a personal obsession, and soon Sandy was seeking out every variety of lebkuchen in the state of Bavaria, reading early 20th-century lebkuchen trade manuals in German, and speaking with any lebkuchen baker willing to talk to her. Eventually, while contemplating a move back to NYC (and, consequently, a life without lebkuchen), Sandy had the idea for Leckerlee. Still, a recipe for Nuremberg lebkuchen, a notoriously difficult delicacy to master, was needed. It took over a year for Sandy, who had no prior baking experience, to develop Leckerlee’s recipe. Many say that it’s the best they’ve ever had!
The name Leckerlee
Leckerlee is a play on words that have specific meaning for us. The word "lecker" means delicious in German. In certain regional German dialects, “leckerle” or “leckerli” are diminutive word forms that can be translated as “delicious little treat”, and they often even refer to specific varieties of gingerbread (Basler leckerli, a type of gingerbread that originates from Basel, Switzerland, is one such example). The extra “e” that we added at the end, while a clever reference to our founder’s surname, also just makes the word easier to pronounce!
